David Coulthard proposes F1 sprint for Madrid after Monaco 2027 addition

Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard proposes the inclusion of a sprint race at the new Madrid circuit as an addition to the 2027 Monaco Grand Prix weekend. The 2027 Formula 1 calendar, recently confirmed, includes 10 sprint races in various locations, including Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Canada, Monaco, Great Britain, Italy, Brazil, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi.

Coulthard, reflecting on his time in the championship, expressed his thoughts on the modern calendar compared to his testing schedule in the past. During the podcast episode Up To Speed, he mentioned that he and his team-mate, or sometimes other cars, would test every week, leading to an exhausting and mentally draining experience. There was no tangible reward for this relentless testing other than job satisfaction.

Coulthard would have preferred a race-heavy schedule instead of endless private running. He believes that a grand prix provides a sense of achievement, and the history books will showcase the team's accomplishments. When mentioning Monaco, he highlighted that the circuit is known for its little overtaking opportunities. Implementing a sprint race in that environment would likely increase entertainment value.

The Spanish Grand Prix, the first event at the newly constructed Madrid circuit, faced criticism for its lack of overtaking opportunities. Despite the excitement surrounding the new event, which replaces the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit as the host of the race under a 10-year contract, it did not meet the expectations of its fans.

McLaren's Lando Norris secured pole position and built a lead in the opening stint, but lost it during an ill-timed virtual safety car period. Championship leader Kimi Antolin claimed the lead and celebrated his eighth win of the season.
