Dalit youth found dead inside police station in UP, family says he was tortured, hanging staged

A Dalit youth was discovered hanging inside a room at the Patti police station in Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh district on Monday. The authorities are investigating the incident, which has led to the arrest of two policemen and the filing of a murder charge under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The youth's family claims he was tortured and that his death was staged.

According to the police, the youth was involved in an abduction case filed by his alleged victim's father. The girl herself stated that she had willingly left with the youth and chose to live with him. The police claim that the youth used a strip of fabric to hang himself. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Superintendent of Police and the investigating officer have been suspended for their role in the case. The family has filed a complaint, leading to the arrest of the policemen and the girl's family members. The district magistrate has recommended a judicial inquiry into the incident.
