Christian Eriksen Leaves Wolfsburg After Second On-Pitch Collapse

Christian Eriksen, the Danish midfielder, has left VfL Wolfsburg after a second on-pitch collapse, ending his contract with the club by mutual consent. The 34-year-old Danish player collapsed during a friendly match against Ukraine in June 2022, which forced him to return to Denmark for rehabilitation. Eriksen previously suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark's opening Euro 2020 match against Finland in 2021.

Eriksen joined Wolfsburg as a free agent in 2022 and made 34 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing 10 assists. However, his performances were not enough to save Wolfsburg from relegation from the Bundesliga. His last appearance for the club came in May when they lost to Paderborn in the promotion-relegation playoff.

VfL Wolfsburg's sport director Dieter Hecking stated that the club agreed to Eriksen's request to terminate his contract, expressing appreciation for the player's achievements in a short career. Eriksen himself expressed his desire to be close to his family in Denmark, citing the importance of his health and well-being. He reflected on his time at Wolfsburg, acknowledging the highs and lows, and said that he was confident in the club's future as it aims to return to the Bundesliga.

Eriksen has a history of cardiac arrests, requiring him to leave Inter Milan in 2017 due to his implanted cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD). He has since played for Brentford, Manchester United, and Wolfsburg. Following his latest collapse in June, Eriksen stated that his ICD had worked as designed and that he was recovering well.
