Chicago School Board Election 2026: The race in District 8b, the Loop, Brighton Park

In the 2026 Chicago School Board election, District 8b candidate Juan Ignacio Gonzalez is running uncontested. The district spans from the Loop to Chicago Lawn, representing a long, narrow area. Gonzalez, a Back of the Yards resident, was appointed by Mayor Brandon Johnson but was removed from the ballot after challenges to his petition signatures. He was motivated to run after hearing concerns from parents about low academic standards and students being used as "political pawns."

Gonzalez, a veteran Chicago Police Department detective and local coffee shop owner, has served with the force since 1999. Despite 25 allegations of misconduct filed against him, all were deemed unfounded. He opened a coffee shop and owns several properties in the area, stating he has invested in the community where he lives and works.

In his campaign, Gonzalez emphasizes the need for high academic standards and career and technical education programs to better serve students, many of whom are immigrants. He also wants to increase transparency in Chicago Public Schools' budget and resource allocation.
