ChatGPT as an extension in Siri dramatically underperformed, says OpenAI

OpenAI expressed disappointment over the low user adoption of ChatGPT within Apple Intelligence, as revealed in recent court filings. The partnership between the two companies was established in 2024, with OpenAI anticipating a "halo effect" from the promotion of Apple Intelligence and increased subscriptions from its users. However, the collaboration appeared to be sluggish from the outset, with OpenAI cutting its forecasts for the number of weekly active users by the summer of 2025.

The court document reveals that OpenAI executives were concerned Apple might pursue a different AI partner, as Apple Intelligence was initially designed to allow users to choose between various AI models, including Google's Gemini. Apple has since integrated Google Gemini models into its new Siri AI, and Xcode has expanded to support coding agents from Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI.

OpenAI argues that recent securities disclosures from SpaceX, the parent company of SpaceXAI, contradict the claims of competitive harm in the lawsuit. OpenAI seeks a ruling in its favor before trial on SpaceXAI's antitrust claims, with the case set to go to trial in January.
