Canada warns citizens against unregulated alcohol in Nigeria

The Canadian government has issued a travel advisory warning its citizens against consuming unregulated and adulterated alcohol in Nigeria due to reported casualties. The advisory, published on the official government website, states that these drinks often contain high levels of methanol, a toxic substance that has caused blindness, organ failure, and death in some cases.

The Canadian government advises travelers to purchase alcohol from reputable establishments and seek medical attention if they experience adverse effects after consuming alcohol. This warning follows reports of 48 deaths in Ondo State, linked to locally prepared alcoholic and herbal concoctions containing high concentrations of methanol.

NAFDAC, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, has confirmed the presence of methanol in 11 out of 15 unlabelled samples tested, with 15 people arrested in connection with the suspected production and distribution of these dangerous beverages.
