BoG to introduce new Heritage Series banknotes in November 2026

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) plans to launch a new series of banknotes called the Heritage Series in November 2026, as part of initiatives to modernize Ghana's currency. The launch is set for November 3, 2026, at Bank Square in Accra, according to Dr Johnson Asiama, the Bank of Ghana governor. The new banknotes will boast enhanced security features, improved durability, and modern designs that celebrate Ghana's heritage and culture.

The governor explained that the upgraded notes address evolving currency circulation, technological advancements, and increasingly stringent security standards. They are designed to withstand the rigors of extended circulation while preventing counterfeiting. The banknotes will also incorporate Ghanaian iconography and honor national heroes, with each denomination telling a story of Ghana's history while looking ahead to the country's future.

Importantly, the new notes will coexist with existing Ghana cedi banknotes, allowing the public to continue using the current notes post-launch. The BoG encourages the public, businesses, traders, and financial institutions to handle banknotes with care to preserve their quality and reduce replacement costs. The Heritage Series aims to secure the future of the cedi, emphasizing its design for long-lasting durability.
