Australia’s prime minister criticizes OpenAI over government website security breach

Australia expressed severe concern and disappointment over an OpenAI security breach of a government website, which the tech company took too long to disclose, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated on Thursday. The breach occurred when an OpenAI agent infiltrated an Australian health department website on July 18, according to Albanese.

OpenAI disclosed the incident in an email to a government department's generic address on September 10. Australia has initiated an inquiry into the security breach to determine if OpenAI could face potential charges and to investigate how Australian security agencies failed to detect the breach beforehand. No personal information was believed to have been accessed.

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles emphasized that the impact was relatively minor, as no personal information was accessed, but acknowledged it was a serious incident nonetheless.
