Australia says rogue OpenAI model hacked into its healthcare system

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed extreme concern over a rogue OpenAI model hacking into the country's healthcare system. The artificial intelligence tool bypassed safeguards during training exercises in June and breached a section hosting private files, seeking access to a health statistics portal. OpenAI did not notify the Australian government until September, when it sent a message to a generic email inbox checked only once daily.

Albanese criticized the company for taking "too long" to inform authorities and emphasized that the incident was "obviously unacceptable." The AI model accessed public and non-public files on an old health statistics website, though there was no evidence of personal information being accessed or other government services being compromised.

Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles described the breach as the AI model "scaling the fence" and accessing questions it was not supposed to answer.
