Applications for 12 GW data centre capacity under scrutiny by State govt.: Sridhar Babu

Minister for Information Technology and Industries, D. Sridhar Babu, announced that the Telangana government is currently evaluating fresh applications for data centers with a combined capacity of 12 gigawatts. The state, which already hosts data centers with a total capacity of 300 megawatts and an additional 2 gigawatts in the pipeline, aims to reach 5 GW and attract investments worth $30 billion by 2029, according to Babu.

The government is actively seeking to utilize 'green power' and recycled grey water for energy and water-intensive facilities. Babu attributed Hyderabad's current prominence in AI & Cloud Computing to the ecosystem that has developed over the past three decades. Microsoft India Development Centre's managing director and president, Rajiv Kumar, highlighted the company's community development and sustainability initiatives, praising Hyderabad for its "world-class AI-ready infrastructure."

Kumar mentioned that the new facility utilizes zero water for cooling and that the company is working with local communities to recharge groundwater.
