Anurag Kashyap challenged India's record of selecting films for the Oscars after the Marathi psychological thriller Gondhal received an official nomination for the 99th Academy Awards. The director brought up films such as The Lunchbox and All We Imagine As Light, expressing films that he believed could have represented India better at the Oscars.
The filmmaker's comments have garnered a reply from Gondhal director Santosh Davakhar, who advised watching the film before judging its Oscar prospects. Kashyap explained in an interview with Variety India that India often chooses the wrong films for the Oscars, and that politics and a lack of awareness play a role in the selection process.
He also noted the exceptionally strong competition at this year's Oscars. However, Kashyap mentioned that he had not yet seen Gondhal or many other films submitted for consideration, making it premature for him to comment on the Marathi film. Davakhar responded to Kashyap's remarks, stating that the film should be screened at international festivals before being considered for the Oscars.
He stressed that Gondhal should seek early exposure through screenings and distribution before aiming for international recognition.
