Amazon Reaches Out To Former Employees For AI, Machine Learning And Cloud Jobs Amid Hiring Push

Amazon is actively reaching out to former employees, including those who experienced layoffs, to fill positions in fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and cloud computing, according to a report by Business Insider. The recruitment effort originated from Amazon Web Services (AWS) Vice-President Swami Sivasubramanian's AI division, which contacted former workers about potential technology roles.

One recruiter described the initiative as "Swami's Boomerang Reengagement Initiative." Amazon India recently reported a slowdown in electronics volume sales ahead of the festive season, amid rising device prices. In another instance, an AWS finance recruiter contacted a former employee and offered a quicker interview process that could potentially lead to a job offer.

The outreach follows several rounds of workforce reductions at Amazon, resulting in over 30,000 job cuts. Despite these cuts, the company has continued hiring for specialized roles associated with AI and cloud technology as it strengthens its focus on emerging technologies. Amazon's spokesperson Haley Silva stated that rehiring former employees, including those who were laid off, is part of the company's broader hiring strategy and not a new practice.

She also clarified that the outreach is not specifically targeted at employees who left due to Amazon's return-to-office policy. The company remains dedicated to its emphasis on AI capabilities, even as it undergoes workforce restructuring and adjusts hiring priorities across various business divisions.
