AI to play a role in better managing cancer: Lo

Health Secretary Lo Chung-mau emphasized the importance of AI in improving cancer management during a session at the World Cancer Congress in Hong Kong. He reflected on the city's significant strides in cancer control and prevention, noting that the age-standardized cancer mortality rate dropped by over 40% in the past three decades.

The annual rate saw declines of 2.8% and 1.7% for men and women respectively over the past decade. Lo highlighted how screening programs have facilitated earlier treatment, allowing for more timely interventions. The government has also taken steps to prevent cancer through vaccination programs and anti-tobacco measures, which have contributed to a historic low smoking rate of 8.5% from around 23% in the 1980s.

Looking forward, authorities intend to enhance management through biotechnology and policy interventions. Lo acknowledged the potential of AI to facilitate earlier detection, accurate diagnosis, and efficient care delivery. However, he stressed the importance of introducing AI carefully, ethically, and in a way that supports rather than supersedes clinicians' judgment.

He assured that the SAR will manage the technology's adoption in a coordinated manner with appropriate governance to ensure patient safety and equity. Moreover, the SAR will leverage its connection to the mainland and global networks to foster healthcare collaboration, continuing its role in the nation's healthcare development. The World Cancer Congress, organized in partnership with the Hong Kong Anti-Cancer Society, took place in Hong Kong for the first time. The three-day event at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai concluded on Saturday.
