ADC Rivers governorship candidate, Ibraye dumps party, says 2027 tickets on quicksand

The 2023 ADC Rivers State governorship candidate, Dr Tonte Ibraye, has withdrawn from the party, citing internal leadership disputes and the uncertain foundation for the 2027 electoral process. In a letter addressed to the ADC Ward Chairman in Degema Ward 16, Bille, Ibraye expressed his resignation on Thursday, citing the David Mark-led faction's dispute as a primary reason for his departure.

Despite remaining committed to ADC's values of internal democracy, fairness, and respect for legitimate structures, recent events have undermined those principles, according to Ibraye. He accused some new members of attempting to usurp legitimate party structures across the country, despite ongoing legal disputes over the party's leadership.

Ibraye warned that allowing a contested leadership to determine candidates for the 2027 elections could jeopardize the legitimacy and stability of those seeking office. He argued that the party's political tickets were being built "on quicksand rather than solid ground." Ibraye criticized the opposition, stating that it has focused more on removing President Bola Tinubu than presenting Nigerians with a clear governance plan.

He decided that he can no longer remain on what he perceives as a "sinking political ship" and plans to consult with supporters, political associates, and leaders across Rivers State's 23 local government areas to determine his next political move. Ibraye thanked ADC members and supporters for their contributions over the years and emphasized that his resignation would not alter his dedication to Rivers State and Nigeria's development or his belief in accountable and people-centered leadership.
