5 memorable Malaysian moments in Bollywood

From 2006 to 2015, Bollywood productions have featured Malaysia in various memorable ways. In 2006, Shah Rukh Khan's action thriller 'Don' was shot extensively in Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi, with about 80% of the film being made in Malaysia. Additionally, both 'Don' and its 2011 sequel had Malaysian actors and extras appearing in the movie.

In 2001, Subhash Ghai's 'Yaadein' also filmed in Langkawi, including a memorable behind-the-scenes moment when director Ghai fell into the sea and was rescued by Hrithik Roshan. The soundtrack of 'Yaadein' further highlighted Malaysia's connection to Bollywood with Siti Nurhaliza's song "Balqis." In 2015, 'Roy' used Malaysia more directly in its plot, with Jacqueline Fernandez, who has Malaysian-Canadian heritage, playing a character traveling to Malaysia for a film project.

'Roy' also showcased lesser-known parts of Malaysia, presenting diverse landscapes to Indian audiences. In 2014, Malaysian actors Fred Chan and Seng Soo Ming made history as the first Malaysians to play leading antagonists in a Bollywood film, '120 Bahadur'. Finally, in 2009, King Edward VII School in Taiping became part of Bollywood history when it was used as a filming location for 'Paa', directed by R Balki.
