Nairobi, Kenya - In a security operation along the Thika–Garissa Highway, police in Kitui County made a startling discovery: 48 rounds of AK-47 ammunition hidden inside pieces of meat on a passenger bus. The driver and turnboy of the Zafanana Coach bus operated by Northern Cruz Sacco were arrested after the vehicle was intercepted en route from Dadaab to Nairobi.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed that officers found a blue woven carrier bag on the overhead luggage rack, containing a black nylon package with the concealed ammunition. The DCI stated that the two arrested individuals were unable to explain the suspicious package or identify its owner. They were taken to the Kanyonyoo Police Station and are currently in custody as the investigation into the source and destination of the ammunition continues.
The bus has been detained, and the recovered ammunition has been secured as evidence for the ongoing investigation.
