2027: AA presidential aspirant challenges INEC for refusing to recognise him as party’s candidate

Ahead of the 2027 Nigerian gubernatorial election, the Lagos State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has contested the name of their candidate listed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). According to the party, Comrade Lanre Adeleke was elected as their governorship candidate in their primary held on May 30, 2026.

The primary was conducted in accordance with the Electoral Act, the Labour Party Constitution and INEC guidelines. The party states that delegates from the 20 local government areas unanimously affirmed Adeleke as their candidate. However, they express concern that INEC published a different name in their official list, which has prompted the party to take legal action and challenge the decision.

The Lagos Labour Party has submitted petitions to the party’s National Working Committee and engaged with relevant stakeholders to resolve the matter. They urged their members and the public to trust their account of the primary and the subsequent events. The party emphasized the importance of protecting internal democracy and maintaining the sanctity of the ballot, even within political parties. They remain committed to peacefully and lawfully resolving the dispute.
