Xi Jinping heads to Washington for Trump talks amid US-China tensions

China's President Xi Jinping embarked on a trip to Washington on Wednesday for talks with US President Donald Trump, as reported by state media. The meetings come amid rising concerns over the development of advanced artificial intelligence systems and ongoing trade tensions between the two nations. Accompanying Xi were his wife Peng Liyuan, his chief adviser Cai Qi, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, among others, according to China Central Television (CCTV).

President Trump is scheduled to meet Xi upon his arrival at Joint Base Andrews before engaging in discussions on Thursday. The White House confirmed that Trump will host Xi for a state dinner at the White House later that evening. The visit is expected to conclude on Friday, with a final gathering featuring a tea ceremony at the White House and a visit to the National Archives.

Analysts have warned, however, that the talks may not yield any concrete agreements. The previous round of preliminary talks between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and his Chinese counterpart He Lifeng focused on establishing a communication channel for concerns about artificial intelligence, with the US proposing a "US-China AI dialogue."

Despite calls from Jimmy Lai, the son of a jailed Hong Kong pro-democracy media mogul, for his father's release, Beijing released Ezra Jin, the founder of an underground church, after Trump raised the issue. China's leverage includes its control over the supply of rare earths, crucial materials for advanced technology products. Earlier this year, Beijing successfully pressured the US to reduce tariffs by imposing stringent controls on exports of these rare earths.
