Why starting 3-0 matters for the 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers are aiming to begin their season with a flawless 3-0 record as they prepare to take on the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday. While a Week 2 loss wouldn't necessarily spell doom for an undefeated team, as those squads have still reached the playoffs around 62% of the time over the past decade, a Week 3 triumph that sees them at 3-0 significantly boosts their chances.

Teams that start the season at 3-0 have a 73.3% playoff success rate, and a win that puts them at 3-0 increases their odds of making the playoffs to 44.4%. Moreover, there's a 20% chance of securing a spot in the division title game and a 1-in-5 shot at the Super Bowl.

Only 45 teams managed to start the season at 3-0 within the last ten years, and three of the most recent ten Super Bowl champions were among them. Another example is the Seattle Seahawks, who are set to face the Washington Commanders, who are expected to have Marcus Mariota under center.

Interestingly, a 2-1 record has a slight edge over a 3-0 record when it comes to making it to the Divisional Round (by 4%), but the gap widens once the playoffs progress further. Teams with a 3-0 record have a 31.1% chance of making the conference championship, compared to a 17.3% chance for those with a 2-1 record.

The 2018 Patriots are the sole Super Bowl champions in the past decade to start their season at 1-2, while five of the last six champions began their season at 2-1, with the 3-0 Rams being the lone exception in 2021. For the 49ers, a Week 3 victory is historically a pathway to the playoffs.
