Western Railway Plans Two New Platforms At Borivali Station To Add 30-40 Local Train Services Towards Virar

Mumbai: Western Railway has finalized plans to construct two additional platforms at Borivali station, aiming to boost suburban train capacity between Borivali and Virar. This expansion is designed to accommodate 30-40 extra local services, alleviating congestion on the existing four-line corridor.

Platform 3A, located at the northern end of Platform 3, will be built as part of the Borivali-Virar fifth and sixth line project. Adding 330 meters in length and seven meters in width, this new platform will serve locals originating or terminating at Borivali for Virar, without disrupting the mainline operations. The construction of this platform is being undertaken by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC).

Adjacent to Platform 1, another platform - Platform 1A - will be constructed on the southern side as part of the Goregaon-Borivali Harbour line extension. Also measuring 330 meters by seven meters, this new platform will enhance the station's infrastructure. Prior to construction, existing stabling lines will need to be moved.

In addition to these platforms, Western Railway plans to extend Platform 10 by 85 meters towards the north and 110 meters towards the south. This extension will connect to the fifth and sixth lines, providing greater capacity and flexibility. Furthermore, a new ground-plus-four-storey station building will be constructed between the new Platform 3A and the existing infrastructure.

The planned capacity expansion extends beyond Borivali. Western Railway also intends to build one additional platform each at Andheri and Virar, on the eastern side of the stations. The fifth and sixth lines aim to separate suburban operations from long-distance train movements, reducing conflicts and improving punctuality on the Virar-Dahanu local services.

For commuters in the northern suburbs, these changes could enable more direct local options from Borivali towards Virar, minimizing the need to travel to Churchgate for train services. "The new platforms will provide better facilities to passengers between Borivali and Virar and create scope for additional local services," stated Vineet Abhishek, CPRO, Western Railway.
