Weinstein set for fresh sentencing in case that helped ignite Hollywood’s MeToo reckoning

NEW YORK, Sept 23 — Former Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, notorious for his role in igniting the MeToo movement, will face sentencing again on Monday for sexually assaulting a former production assistant in 2006. The 74-year-old is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence for the same crime, which was overturned on appeal in 2024.

A retrial in 2025 found him guilty again. Following the verdict, the victim, Miriam Haley, expressed relief at the outcome, stating that the verdict signifies growing awareness around sexual violence and the fading of the "perfect victim" myth. Weinstein, once a powerful figure in Hollywood, was at the center of allegations that brought the MeToo movement to the forefront.

Over 80 women accused him of abusive behavior, with The New Yorker and The New York Times investigating his misconduct. In addition to the New York case, Weinstein is scheduled to be resentenced in California for the 2013 rape and assault of an actress in a Los Angeles hotel room. The appeals court upheld his conviction in June but reduced his prison term to 16 years.

In May, a New York judge declared a mistrial in another case involving Weinstein and actor Jessica Mann, as the jury failed to reach a verdict. Weinstein, who is wheelchair-bound due to health issues, continues to deny all allegations.
