UK ready to lead global push on AI Standards, Burnham tells UN

On his inaugural visit to the United Nations as Britain's seventh Prime Minister in a decade, Andy Burnham emphasized the need for Britain to lead an international push on establishing AI standards. He argued that fundamental AI decisions should be made by elected governments, rather than left to technology companies. The Prime Minister cited growing concerns over AI potentially outpacing safeguards and posing national security risks.

He expressed his concern about AI at the UN General Assembly, saying, "I know how worried people are. So we have to rise to this moment." Burnham aimed to position Britain as an 'honest broker' to take a leadership role in AI, leveraging its close ties with the US, improving relationship with the EU, and good relations with China and India.

He noted Britain's AI Security Institute, which works closely with US and major AI labs on safety, but called for further advancements. Burnham emphasized that Britain expects full and total visibility of new frontier AI models to strengthen preparedness and resilience. He pledged to work towards a global consensus on AI principles and standards, ensuring transparency, access, and safety in AI development.

In addition, he announced a new National Centre for Information Defence to detect, attribute, and disrupt hostile state information attacks, as well as identify deepfakes that could damage British interests.
