UK launches its first 'space squadron' to counter hostile threats

The UK is set to establish its inaugural space squadron, the No III Space Effects Squadron, as part of its efforts to safeguard British satellites from potential hostile actions, the Ministry of Defence has announced. This new unit will be the first dedicated British military force focused on identifying and countering hostile threats in space.

The primary objective of the squadron is to protect critical satellites that are instrumental in guiding warships, predicting missile strikes, and sustaining civilian infrastructure.

Minister of Defence Wes Streeting emphasized the importance of enhancing the nation's deterrence capabilities in space, aligning it with terrestrial defense mechanisms. He stated, "My job is to ensure that our deterrence in space is as robust as it is on Earth." This new unit represents a significant shift in Britain's stance towards the increasingly contentious space domain.

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smyth, highlighted the lessons learned from recent conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, which have underscored the importance of uncrewed systems that rely heavily on satellite communication. He stressed that while no one desires a war in space, it is now recognized as a "warfighting domain in its own right," where the UK's operational edge and strategic advantage could be gained or swiftly lost.

Russia has been particularly active, jamming UK military satellites on a weekly basis and shadowing German military space vehicles. A collision between two satellites traveling at three kilometers per second could have devastating consequences, generating substantial debris in an already congested orbital environment. This scenario, known as the Kessler Effect, could lead to a cascade of collisions, potentially rendering all satellites in that orbit inoperable.

The No III Space Effects Squadron will integrate specialists from across the UK armed forces and utilize capabilities such as electronic warfare to counter hostile activities in space. This squadron will complement the RAF's existing No I Space Operations Squadron and No II Space Warning Squadron, which focus on monitoring and warning about potential threats. The new unit's mission is to safeguard vital space-based benefits for the UK's integrated armed forces and to be capable of denying these advantages to adversaries.

Furthermore, the UK is planning to establish three additional space squadrons, including a unit dedicated to space tactics and training. Minister Streeting underscored that the growing dependency on space technology has made it increasingly vulnerable to adversarial actions. He asserted that while the UK is investing £880 million over the next four years in space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, it remains committed to the peaceful use of space and has ruled out destructive anti-satellite missile testing.
