Trump says Canada is ‘destroying itself’ because of ‘unchecked’ immigrants

U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized Canada in a recent social media post, alleging that the country is "destroying itself" due to "unchecked and unvetted" immigration. Trump claims that this policy is causing unspecified problems that will soon become unmanageable and describes it as a "Liberal takeover that will end very badly."

The U.S. president asserts that the Canadian immigration system is already responsible for high unemployment rates. According to the latest data, Canada's unemployment rate in August was 6.4 percent, compared to the U.S. unemployment rate of 4.1 percent.

Trump notes that Canada has reduced its immigration intake over the past two years, abandoning plans to admit 500,000 permanent residents annually. The country has also introduced targets for admissions of international students and temporary workers following significant increases in these populations.

Data from the Canadian Immigration Department shows that the number of temporary residents arriving in the country between January and July this year is 66 percent lower compared to the same period in 2024, when reduction measures were implemented. Statistics Canada population estimates indicate that Canada's population growth has been stagnant due to reduced immigration, and the parliamentary budget officer expects zero population growth this year.

All visitors, temporary foreign workers, students, immigrants, and refugees in Canada undergo comprehensive security screening protocols. They can be deemed inadmissible based on security concerns, human or international rights violations, or organized criminality, as stated on the Immigration Department's website.
