Travel offers used to trap foreigners as drug mules

Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar revealed that an international drug syndicate utilized job offers and travel packages as a lure to deceive foreign nationals into becoming drug mules. The syndicate provided travel packages in the Klang Valley and paid up to RM6,000 for the journey. This modus operandi was discovered following raids on Aug 28 and Sept 21 at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and the Sepang district.

Among the 12 suspects arrested, 11 were foreigners, consisting of four men and seven women, while the remainder was a local man. All the arrested suspects, aged between 17 and 62, had no criminal records and urine tests returned negative for drugs. Police seized 671 plastic packets containing compressed cannabis blocks, weighing 418 kilograms and valued at RM33.4 million.

Additionally, six suspects were charged under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, while the remaining six were placed in remand for further investigation. Police also seized two vehicles and foreign currencies, with an estimated value of RM37.7 million.
