Torrevieja Plans 3.7km of New Cycle Lanes to fill Network Gaps

The Torrevieja City Council in Spain has launched a €413,665 project to extend its fragmented cycle lane network by 3.7 kilometres, as reported in <source 8b5522e7-798>. The initiative aims to connect key schools, sports facilities, and residential areas, addressing the council's own admission that current routes are poorly connected. While the main phase will create a route from Ciudad del Mar primary school area to Delfina Viudes, a connection to Avenida de París is planned for a later stage.

The project, valued at €413,665 including VAT, with half the cost covered by the EU’s European Regional Development Fund, will notably replace parking on a section of Calle Gabriela Mistral with a 2.5-metre wide two-way cycle lane, alongside a three-metre traffic lane. Further improvements include a 1.5-metre wide lane on Avenida de La Mancha, with adequate space to separate cyclists from traffic and parked vehicles.

Additionally, a 3-metre-wide, two-way cycle lane protected by a central divider will be introduced on Avenida de Monge y Bielsa, extending past sports facilities and the César Mateo Cid roundabout.

The tender also covers repairs to the existing Delfina Viudes lane, identified as having badly faded markings and poor surface condition. Cyclists can expect improved safety at key junctions through better signage and dropped kerbs, as well as dedicated bicycle parking near schools, sports facilities, and other busy destinations.

A counter on Delfina Viudes will monitor bicycle usage. The project report also notes an optional tender for improving a 340-metre section near Mare Nostrum, which would be funded by the successful contractor.
