The route that changed history

King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud contemplated a journey home to Riyadh years before Saudi Arabia's unification. After leaving Riyadh in 1891, he found solace in the desert, contemplating the city's recovery. Darah, the King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives, chronicled how Abdulaziz's leadership emerged during this time, hinting at his vision of building a state.

His first attempt to reclaim Riyadh occurred at the Battle of Al-Sarif in 1901, but the endeavor failed. However, this setback did not deter Abdulaziz. Several months later, he embarked on a new journey toward Riyadh, accompanied by a few loyal men. This expedition aimed to recover the city, a task that required secrecy, determination, and meticulous planning.

The journey itself became a crucial part of the operation. Darah preserved a map depicting the secret route Abdulaziz took to recapture Riyadh in 1319H/1902, offering a geographical account of the journey that paved the way for a monumental moment. On January 15, 1902, exactly five months after his departure, Riyadh was finally recovered.

This audacious return was merely the commencement of something far more significant. Darah identified the recapture of Riyadh as one of the principal events in Saudi Arabia's history, marking the onset of the unification phase that led to the formation of the modern Saudi state. From Riyadh, King Abdulaziz spent the subsequent decades uniting various parts of the country, expanding its geographical boundaries, establishing a government, and developing institutional frameworks.

The city that had once been the goal of a clandestine mission transformed into the capital of an expanding state. Thirty years after the recapture of Riyadh, the process culminated in a defining political milestone. On September 23, 1932, the royal order unifying the country under the name Kingdom of Saudi Arabia came into effect. The Darah guide described this announcement as the culmination of a nearly three-decade-long process of unification and development.

While the distance between these two pivotal moments can be measured in kilometers, the transition from a personal quest to a national unification cannot be quantified solely in physical terms. The journey to Riyadh represented the beginning of a nation, and the city's recapture signified the arrival of a unified state. In retrospect, the route taken by King Abdulaziz in 1902 emerged as the initial step toward the formation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
