Taoiseach to meet Mayor Mamdani in New York

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in New York on September 23, according to a statement from the State Department. This meeting takes place on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, as Washington continues its diplomatic efforts concerning Russia's war against Ukraine.

The conflict has prompted President Donald Trump's talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the U.N. on September 22, where Zelensky stated Ukraine is prepared for an energy ceasefire if Russia meets the same conditions. During their discussions, President Trump and Zelensky also touched upon winter support, air defense, and the potential for future peace talks.

Lavrov arrived in New York to participate in the U.N. General Assembly, as reported by Russian state media. Rubio and Lavrov have met multiple times over the past year as the Trump administration endeavored to negotiate an end to Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine. In September 2025, the two officials convened in the U.N.

General Assembly, with Rubio advocating for Moscow to "halt the bloodshed" and make substantial progress towards ending the war. They also held talks in Riyadh in February 2025, as part of the inaugural high-level U.S.-Russia negotiations since the onset of Russia's invasion. The State Department revealed that Rubio will be in New York from September 20 to 23 for the 81st session of the U.N.

General Assembly, where he is engaging with foreign counterparts on security, economic matters, and peace initiatives.
