Suame MP condemns attempt by EOCO official to arrest Manhyia South MP

Manhyia South Member of Parliament Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has challenged the Economic and Organised Crime Office’s (EOCO) account of a recent attempted arrest. According to EOCO, officers tried to take him into custody on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, as part of lawful efforts to ensure his presence in an ongoing investigation.

However, Mr Awuah contends that he was never personally invited by the agency. He raised this point hours after EOCO made its own statement, asserting that it had invited him twice in February 2026 to help with its investigation, but his responses were declined. The MP dismissed EOCO's claim, labeling it as false. This dispute stems from a February 27, 2026 letter from EOCO to Mr Awuah, who is also a Senior Partner at the law firm Sarkodie Baffour Awuah and Partners.

The letter referenced an earlier invitation sent on February 10, 2026, and noted that it had been addressed to him in his role at the firm. EOCO warned that non-compliance with the invitation could lead to measures to compel his presence. However, the MP's latest remarks suggest ambiguity regarding whether the invitation was personally directed at him or at the firm, and whether his role in the firm still held weight with EOCO.

Following the attempted arrest, Mr Awuah clashed with officers outside the Accra High Court. EOCO later stated that the attempt to arrest him was halted due to escalating tension, fearing potential public safety risks. Despite this, the agency stated that its investigation into Mr Awuah is ongoing. They acknowledged that after the incident, Mr Awuah sought refuge at Parliament, which was in recess at the time.

EOCO affirmed that while parliamentary privileges and immunities are respected, they do not exempt individuals from legal accountability.
