Strong newspaper readership continues in Finland, survey shows

The vast majority of Finnish audiences want clear labelling of AI-made content.

Finns remain strong newspaper readers and magazine subscribers, according to the latest National Readership Survey conducted by Media Metrics Finland. The survey revealed that printed or digital newspapers are consumed by 93% of the Finnish population on a weekly basis, while magazines have a reach of 81% among the population each month.

This marks the first time the survey inquired about people's opinions on the use of artificial intelligence in media. A remarkable 91% of respondents expressed their desire to be informed when media content has been generated using AI. The survey also explored the willingness of citizens to pay for quality journalism. Seventy percent of respondents indicated they would be willing to pay for well-produced journalistic content.

The survey, carried out by market research firm Fifty5Blue, gathered responses from over 23,000 individuals aged 15 and above from across mainland Finland. The project was commissioned by Media Metrics Finland, the joint audience measurement company for Finnish media industry. The survey encompassed all Finnish media companies, ranging from Alma Media to Yle.
