STATE POLICE: Osun Assembly approves constitutional amendments, first to do so

The Osun State House of Assembly has approved the proposed constitutional amendment to establish state police structures, marking a first for the country's 36 state legislatures. Lawmakers unanimously approved the amendment after discussing it at a plenary session on Tuesday, following a letter from the National Assembly requesting deliberation on the proposed amendment.

Adewale Egbedun, the Assembly's Speaker, read the letter and explained that the amendment has been forwarded to the House for its consideration as part of the constitutional amendment process. Lawmakers Lawrence Adeoti and Taofeek Olayiwola, representing Ife South and Ede South state constituencies, respectively, supported the passage of the bill, emphasizing that state police would improve security nationwide.

Adewumi Adeyemi and Jeremiah Awoyeye, representing Obokun and Ife Central state constituencies, respectively, also backed the amendment, stating that state police would bolster the security framework of the nation. After the debate, Majority Leader Babajide Kofoworola moved the motion for the House to support the proposed amendment, which was seconded by Tajudeen Adeyemi.
