Sokoto govt alerts schools over reported diphtheria cases

The Sokoto State Government has instructed schools throughout the region to bolster preventive measures in response to confirmed diphtheria cases in adjacent states. This directive was issued by Prof. Ahmad Ladan Ala, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, who recommended that school principals and staff keep a close eye on the health of students and staff, and promptly report any suspected cases.

The ministry's Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Muhammad Iya, revealed these details in a statement released on Wednesday in Sokoto. The ministry provided a detailed list of diphtheria symptoms, which include sore throat, hoarseness, mild fever and chills, swollen neck glands, weakness, fatigue, difficulty in swallowing or breathing, and the appearance of a thick greyish membrane in the throat. These symptoms can manifest between two to five days post-exposure to the infection.

In light of this outbreak, the ministry recommended that schools refer any students or staff exhibiting the aforementioned symptoms to appropriate healthcare facilities, such as Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Infectious Diseases Hospital, Specialist Hospital, and Amanawa General Hospital in Sokoto. The ministry also urged schools to reinforce hygiene practices by promoting frequent handwashing and maintaining a clean learning environment.

Parents and guardians were asked to ensure that their children receive the necessary vaccinations. The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education called upon schools, parents, teachers, and students to remain vigilant and collaborate closely with health authorities to effectively combat the spread of diphtheria in Sokoto.
