Singapore PM Wong warns against complacency as security threats evolve

Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong cautioned citizens against complacency as evolving security threats loom over the nation. Addressing the 10th anniversary of SGSecure, Wong urged the public to remain vigilant despite years of peace and security, warning that the absence of dramatic incidents should not lull people into a false sense of safety.

Wong cited instances where authorities thwarted potential lone-wolf attacks, including a 17-year-old who was detained in 2024 for planning a neighborhood attack. He emphasized that while their system prevented harm, no security measure can guarantee 100 percent protection, necessitating continued caution. Wong said Singaporeans grew accustomed to daily routines without constant fear, but such actions in other parts of the world underscore the exceptional nature of Singapore's safety.

The SGSecure campaign, initiated 10 years ago, encourages vigilance, preparedness, and unity, urging citizens to report suspicious behavior while maintaining confidence and peace of mind. Wong also highlighted strengthened neighborhood, workplace, and educational security, pointing to the ISD's recent threat assessment indicating heightened terrorism risk, rising community hostilities, and increased youth radicalization.

The Prime Minister's remarks were made amid the announcement of a new AI-powered WhatsApp chatbot to aid SGSecure advocates and volunteers in accessing resources and engaging the public.
