Singapore PM Wong warns against complacency as security threats evolve

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized the importance of maintaining vigilance regarding safety and security in Singapore during a speech at the SGSecure 10th anniversary event on September 23. He cautioned that after years of peace and security, complacency could set in, potentially leading to overlooked threats. Wong highlighted examples such as ignoring an unattended bag in a public area or dismissing signs of someone being drawn to extremist content.

He stressed the need for individuals to speak up when they notice something amiss, as taking action can prevent potential harm. Wong pointed out that the theme of the event, "Our Ordinary Days are Worth Cherishing," aims to remind Singaporeans of the importance of staying vigilant and prepared in their daily lives. He noted that an ordinary day in Singapore includes things like children going to school, people going to work, friends having meals together, and families returning home safely at night.

These seemingly mundane activities are precious and should be cherished, but they also require constant awareness to protect the peace and security Singapore enjoys. Terrorism remains a significant concern for the country, Wong added, warning that threats are broader than just terrorism. He cautioned that individuals could become radicalized online and carry out attacks, or there could be violent acts in schools, workplaces, religious organizations, or public spaces.

While security agencies have intervened in some close calls, Wong stressed that no security system can guarantee 100% protection. He highlighted that despite Singapore's progress in raising awareness through SGSecure, complacency must be avoided. Wong also mentioned a recent case in 2024 where an ISD detained a 17-year-old self-radicalized individual planning an attack at a neighbourhood center.

In response, the Tampines GRC Community Response Roundtable worked with religious leaders to convey that violent extremist ideologies do not divide communities. Looking ahead, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) and Singapore Security and Protection Organization (SSPO) plan to launch another SGSecure-themed storybook for preschoolers in October 2026.

Additionally, the SPF and SSPO collaborated to develop SGSecure mini-games within MATA-verse on Roblox to engage youths. Over the past decade, SGSecure has engaged more than 716,000 households through house visits, and over 279,000 people have signed up as community responders. The program has also been integrated into school curriculums and reached over 70,000 companies with preparedness efforts at the workplace.

Over 475,000 people participated in interfaith activities, and more than 1,300 religious and community organization representatives were sensitized to terror threats. The public can visit the SGSecure website for updates on activities, including the upcoming February 2027 SGSecure Roadshow.
