Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez aligned himself with the UN in advocating for regulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI), while US President Donald Trump opposes slowing down the technological revolution. This divide between the two leaders has widened during the UN General Assembly.

Sánchez declined to attend the traditional official reception offered by Trump in New York, citing agenda-related reasons. He amplified the stance of those advocating for controls on AI development, which Trump defends without restrictions. The tension between the two leaders stemmed from Trump's recurring threats to economically punish Spain for not increasing military spending or preventing the use of its military bases against Iran.

The US president also accused Sánchez of being responsible for the illegal influx of hundreds of immigrants from Morocco to Ceuta, a city in Spain. Additionally, Trump threatened to impose new tariffs on the entire European Union if they accepted the EU as an associate country, similar to Canada's relationship with Canada.

Sánchez did not attend Trump's reception in New York, claiming agenda conflicts and noting that his travel plans were already set. His official itinerary included bilateral meetings with UK, Lebanese, Namibian, and Panamanian leaders, the California governor, the former Prime Minister of Australia, and Apple's CEO. Sánchez also attended an act about funding for development with Barbados' Prime Minister Mia Mottley and UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.

He also participated in a tribute to Gloria Steinem, a recently deceased journalist and women's rights activist.

One of the highlights of Sánchez's day was his intervention in the High-Level Dialogue on protecting children's rights from AI: coalition for kids' rights and their protection in the age of AI. Spain, alongside France, Kenya, and Australia, positioned the protection of children's rights as a central focus of digital agenda, establishing controls.

Sánchez argued for a global response and international alliance to safeguard digital rights. He advocated for a global approach and a collaborative effort to ensure digital rights. This stance contrasted sharply with Trump's, who mocked AI risk warnings from its own developers, saying whoever wins in AI wins. He claimed to be leading the AI race ahead of China and others, asserting they would not slow down progress that could surpass the Industrial Revolution or the Internet.
