Public transport fares go up by 8% from September 26: Check how much you will pay

Public transport fares in Ghana will increase by 8% starting September 26, 2026. This adjustment was agreed upon after discussions between the Ministry of Transport and road transport operators from September 8 to 22, 2026, under the Administrative Instrument on Public Transport Fares. The increase is due to rising operational costs, including fuel prices, spare parts, and vehicle maintenance, as well as to support drivers and commuters facing financial pressures.

For shared taxis, fare increases range from GH¢1.70 to GH¢20.20, while trotro fares, which currently range from GH¢5 to GH¢36.80, will also see increases. Long-distance services will see the most significant changes, with the highest inter-city fare increasing from GH¢300 to GH¢324. All commercial transport operators are instructed to adhere to the new rates, and sanctions will be imposed on those charging more than the approved fares.
