Private Claimants Challenge Torrevieja Council Over 14.7 Hectares of Land in Las Torretas

Two private individuals have filed a legal claim, asserting ownership of nearly 15 hectares of land in Las Torretas, a territory that the Torrevieja City Council asserts is municipal property. The disputed area, comprising 146,744 square meters, is designated as public green space and is believed to originate from land that should have been transferred to the council during the development of Las Torretas over 40 years ago.

The council has promised to defend its claim in administrative court proceedings, yet the government has not publicly disclosed the exact location of the disputed land. The dispute emerged after the council formally registered the plots as municipal property, despite the land not previously being recorded in the council's name. According to the council, the land became public property through the compulsory transfer obligations associated with the original urban development.

The two claimants contested the council's decision to register the land, and after their administrative appeal was dismissed, they proceeded to court. The council has since included the plots in its official property inventory through a mayoral decree, asserting that it is not acquiring the land but formally documenting ownership based on obligations imposed at the time of the Las Torretas development approval.
