Police bust RM33.4mil cannabis distribution ring

Selangor police officials disclosed on September 21 that a significant cannabis distribution ring has been dismantled, resulting in the arrest of 12 individuals. The operation, conducted between August 28 and September 21, targeted drug mules at KLIA and Sepang, thwarting a scheme to smuggle cannabis buds valued at RM33.4 million. The arrested suspects comprise one Malaysian man, four foreign men, and seven foreign women. Additionally, 671 packets of cannabis buds weighing 418kg were seized.

The drug mules were allegedly lured with job opportunities and tourism packages from their home countries and were instructed to bring concealed luggage upon arrival. The local suspect, believed to be involved in drug trafficking since early 2026, is suspected of acting as the runner responsible for supplying drugs to the mules. All suspects are alleged to be part of separate syndicates.

During the press conference, Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar also reported the seizure of assets worth RM37,700, including two cars and foreign currencies belonging to the suspects. As of now, six suspects have been charged under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, while the remaining six are still under investigation. Notably, none of the suspects have prior criminal records in Malaysia, and travel documents of foreign suspects revealed they entered the country using social visit passes.
