Poland scrambles jets after Russian helicopter breaches its airspace

On Wednesday, a Russian Mi-8 helicopter entered Polish airspace near the exclave of Kaliningrad, prompting Polish fighter jets to scramble in response. The helicopter remained in Polish airspace for 42 seconds before departing. Poland's Operational Command of Armed Forces confirmed the incident via a statement on X, noting that the flight was detected by the military's radio-location systems.

Ground forces remained on standby in readiness for any potential escalation. The incident is seen as Russia testing the readiness of Poland's air defense system, according to an Operational Command spokesperson.

The event follows revelations from Polish prosecutors that a Russian Gerbera 2 drone found in the Baltic Sea last week had been equipped with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk had warned on September 17 that Russia could launch drone or missile strikes against countries supporting Ukraine, suggesting they would attempt to disguise such attacks as accidents.

European officials have accused Russia of using various tactics, including sabotage, cyberattacks, espionage, and drone operations to pressure countries backing Ukraine in the ongoing full-scale war.

In August, Germany attributed an attempted explosive-drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport to Russia. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen recently accused a Russian frigate of firing two flares at a Danish military helicopter, labeling it an attempt to test NATO and part of Russia's aggressive hybrid warfare strategy. Russian President Vladimir Putin denies plans to attack NATO countries, but Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has threatened a short, intense war if any European nation attacks Russia. Tusk's office and the Russian Embassy in Warsaw have not yet commented on the incident.
