Ottawa votes to rename ‘Trump Avenue’ as city distances itself from U.S. president

The Ottawa City Council has decided to rename Trump Avenue, bringing an end to the ongoing dispute surrounding the street's politically charged moniker and effectively severing its symbolic link to U.S. President Donald Trump. The decision emerged from a staff report suggesting the change and aligns with the current strained state of Canada–U.S. relations, notably trade disagreements.

Situated in the Central Park neighborhood of Ottawa, Trump Avenue was established in the late 1990s and early 2000s as part of a development constructed on former Experimental Farm land. The entire community was meticulously designed with an explicit New York City theme, including street and park names inspired by Manhattan landmarks such as Manhattan Crescent, Staten Way, Bloomingdale Street, and Madison Park. At that point, Trump was primarily recognized as a high-profile New York developer.

Following the council's decision, the city will embark on the process of selecting a new name, informing residents, and updating municipal records. The transformation will also necessitate coordination with emergency services, utility companies, and Canada Post to ensure a smooth transition. The move comes amidst heightened tensions between Trump and Canadian authorities, stemming from recent disputes over tariffs, trade negotiations, and public statements that have spilled over into municipal politics.

Council members pointed out that while the street was never intended to reference the U.S. president, its continued existence had become a source of discomfort for residents. City staff indicated that the renaming process will involve consultation with affected homeowners before a final name is approved.
