R Ashwin disclosed that former Indian coach Ashish Nehra was among the names considered for the CSK head coach role before Zaheer Khan's appointment. Nehra, currently thriving with Gujarat Titans, has been successful in leading the franchise to victory in their debut IPL season. Ashwin revealed that CSK held conversations with several candidates, including Nehra, before settling on Zaheer Khan.

The search for a successor to Stephen Fleming, which culminated in Zaheer's appointment on a one-year contract, was reportedly far more extensive than initially suggested. Ashwin praised Zaheer's relationship with MS Dhoni and his understanding of the game, stating that he believes Khan is the ideal choice for the CSK team.
