New UK agency will tackle ‘information warfare’ from likes of Russia, Burnham says

The UK government announced the creation of a new National Centre for Information Defence to combat disinformation and deepfakes originating from hostile states, such as Russia. The Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, emphasized the government's duty to "stem the poisonous tide" of damaging information attacks from abroad. The centre will work to detect, attribute, and disrupt information warfare carried out by foreign powers, particularly those enabled by AI technology.

Burnham highlighted the insidious nature of Russian campaigns that distort public perception of Britain and create a narrative of decline, division, and despair. He also noted that certain groups, such as those struggling with the cost of living or young people not in employment, education, or training, may be particularly susceptible to manipulation online.

The prime minister stressed the need for the UK to approach the coming decade with "eyes wide open" and be prepared to defend its values and uphold the rule of law. The UK plans to share its experience in defending against information attacks with other countries and has already provided support to Moldova in protecting its elections from Russian interference.
