Never a friendly, Ancelotti demands focus for Brazil’s historic India clash

India, alongside Australia, Brazil, and Canada, joined the European Union in launching a platform to defend multilateralism. The initiative, known as Partners for multilateralism, international law, peace, and prosperity (P4M), aims to promote inclusivity and prosperity at the margins of the UN General Assembly. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the necessity of participatory deliberations and transparent decision-making during the inaugural summit in New York on September 21.

The platform, first proposed in a joint op-ed by Jaishankar, Costa, Albanese, Vieira, Mottley, Carney, and Kenyan President William Ruto, seeks to reform multilateral institutions to make them more representative, effective, and trusted. Jaishankar highlighted the need for collaborative efforts to address various global issues, such as international security, climate justice, emerging technologies, development finance, supply chains, pandemic response, and terrorism.

He also stressed the importance of adhering to international law, rules, and norms. European Council President Antonio Costa shared the commitment of the signatories to cooperation amid growing divisions, outlining three priorities: defending the UN Charter, addressing global challenges like climate finance and AI, and reforming global institutions to better prevent conflict, respond to crises, and promote sustainable development.
