Nairobi Waives Approvals for Minor Building Repairs Ahead of Expected Rains

Nairobi County has eliminated the need for applications and approvals for small building fixes before the anticipated heavy rains. Governor Johnson Sakaja announced the waiver to enable citizens to install gutters and make minor repairs to their residences and properties without navigating the typical approval procedures. "In preparation for the expected El Niño rains, I have waived the application and approval procedures for minor building repairs until the start of the rains," Sakaja stated.

Kenya is getting ready for intense and above-average rainfall and possible flooding during the October to December 2026 short-rains season, as El Niño conditions grow stronger. During Wednesday's visit, Sakaja coordinated emergency readiness initiatives in locations such as Infinity, Bunyala Road, Makadara, and Mowlem. The county has allocated additional equipment to broaden and deepen drainage channels, remove debris from waterways, and clear drainage routes to lessen flood risks.

Sakaja acknowledged that uncontrolled waste dumping poses a significant obstacle to the city's flood readiness. He threatened legal action against those found disposing of waste illegally, while private waste haulers found dumping waste in public spaces risk losing their licenses permanently. "Our readiness efforts are being coordinated through a 'One County, One Plan, One Command' strategy, working alongside national government and humanitarian organizations," Sakaja explained.

He urged residents to take proactive steps to safeguard their homes and neighborhoods before the rains. "I urge Nairobians to prepare early by keeping drainage channels clear, installing gutters, and taking necessary precautions as we collaborate to keep our city safe," he advised.
