Murmu urges actors against endorsing harmful health products; ‘True star spreads light, not darkness’

President Droupadi Murmu addressed film stars on Tuesday (September 22, 2026), urging them not to promote products detrimental to human health. She emphasized that a "true star" spreads light, not darkness, underscoring the influence of celebrities on young minds. At a grand ceremony at Ekta Nagar near the Statue of Unity, she presented the 72nd National Film Awards for 2024 to top actors.

Murmu stressed the importance of role models adopting a disciplined lifestyle, as millions of children and young people look up to them. She called for increased female participation in jury selections for the National Film Awards, stating that women's perspectives are crucial for a comprehensive human outlook. The President also appealed for respect and social security for workers, small-scale artists, and assistants who contribute to the creative economy.

Murmu recalled her previous appeal for respect and sensitivity towards every crew member and hoped the industry would heed her requests. She praised the quality of Indian films, expressing confidence that they would set global benchmarks for excellence. The ceremony honored veteran Kannada actor Anant Nag with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honor in Indian cinema.

Additionally, Yami Gautam, Kartik Aaryan, and Mammootty were awarded as best actors in male and female categories. Article 370, directed by Aditya Suhas Jambhale, was recognized with the Best Feature Film award.
