M’sia to make case for UN relevance, stronger multilateralism at general assembly

Malaysia's Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan will lead the country's delegation to the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) this week, marking his third time in this role since assuming the foreign affairs portfolio in December 2023. The delegation is set to address the theme 'Restoring trust, managing transformation, a United Nations that delivers for all' from September 23 to September 27.

During his national statement on September 26, Mohamad is expected to emphasize the need for stronger multilateralism and for the UN to remain relevant and empowered in delivering peace, justice, and dignity for all humanity. Nadzirah Osman, Malaysia's permanent representative to the UN, highlighted that in an era of growing scrutiny and trust deficit towards the global body, the international community must move from mere words to collective, concrete actions.

The UN is currently grappling with financial pressures, a leadership transition, and geopolitical tensions. US President Donald Trump recently criticized the UN's effectiveness and bureaucracy, advocating for countries to take action independently. Meanwhile, the UN's secretary-general Antonio Guterres is set to step down at the end of the year, and a leadership race includes four women among seven declared candidates, all of whom have prior leadership experience in their countries.

Mohamad's statement is also anticipated to touch upon issues such as the Palestinian conflict, Middle East geopolitical tensions, UN and Security Council reform, development gaps, and sustainable development goals. In addition to the national address, Mohamad will engage in bilateral meetings with foreign ministers from nations including Nepal, Iran, Kuwait, Ghana, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Algeria.

He will also meet with UN Secretary-General Guterres, the assembly's president Khalilur Rahman, and Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey. This will be Mohamad's third time leading Malaysia's delegation to the UNGA since taking over the foreign affairs portfolio in December 2023.
