More Torontonians are eyeing an exit as affordability pressures intensify, new Ipsos poll shows

Over one-third of Toronto residents (37 per cent) are considering leaving the city within the next five years, primarily due to rising costs and affordability issues, according to an Ipsos City Poll published on Wednesday. Sixty-five per cent of those contemplating a move cite "too expensive" as their main reason, far surpassing any other factor.

Twenty-eight per cent of respondents said they were "not at all likely" to move, while 35 per cent chose "not very likely." Beyond affordability, younger adults (18 to 34 years) and lower-income households are most likely to consider leaving. Traffic, crime concerns, and the desire for more space also play a role, but none of these issues outweigh affordability in terms of weight.

In the mayoral race, Mayor Olivia Chow maintains a strong lead with 36 per cent support, trailing her opponent Brad Bradford by 15 points at 21 per cent. Chow's re-election sentiment has increased by five points from last year, with 47 per cent of Torontonians believing she "deserves re-election," while her approval rating remains steady at 59 per cent.

Despite affordability frustrations, opinions about Toronto's future are increasingly optimistic. Two-thirds (66 per cent) of residents express optimism about the city's future, marking a seven-point increase from last year. Additionally, majorities agree that Toronto is a great place to work (74 per cent) and raise a family (64 per cent).
