MLS coach sacked after sexist remark to female referee

The Columbus Crew, a Major League Soccer club, have terminated the contract of their reserve team coach following a sexist remark made to a female referee. The incident occurred during an MLS Next Pro league match. Federico Higuain, who is the brother of former Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain, was removed from his position and issued a two-match suspension.

The club's general manager, Issa Tall, announced the decision, stating that it was in the best interest of the club, players, and staff. The team's standards were not met after discussions with Tall's team, leading to the dismissal. The Professional Soccer Referees Association (PSRA) criticized the league's response, arguing that Higuain's two-game ban was insufficient.

The PSRA's statement highlighted Higuain's acts of physical abuse and sexism towards the female official, including squeezing her hand and refusing to let go after being told to stop multiple times. The remark, "Don't forget, this is a man's game," was deemed demeaning and sexist. The PSRA emphasized that women excel at every level of the sport and should not endure such intimidation or derogatory comments.

The union stated that women deserve the same respect, dignity, and safe working environment as their male counterparts.
