Middle East Conflict: Hopes of a permanent ceasefire have faded - BoG Governor

The United States Army is sending 1,200 National Guard soldiers to the Middle East, marking the first combat deployment for its newly restructured Mobile Brigade Combat Teams (MBCT). These 1,200 soldiers will bolster Operation Inherent Resolve, a US-led mission in the region. The 116th Brigade, composed of National Guard units from Virginia and Kentucky, merges conventional ground forces with advanced unmanned aerial systems (UAS), electronic warfare (EW), counter-UAS tools, and state-of-the-art command-and-control systems.

The MBCT concept aims to create a more mobile, sensor-rich, and digitally connected force capable of detecting, disrupting, and defeating hostile drones and other emerging threats. The 116th Brigade has a storied history dating back to colonial America, participating in major conflicts such as the Revolutionary War, both World Wars, and peacekeeping missions in Kosovo.

With this deployment, the US Army will conduct the first combat operation for the brigade. The Army's transition to MBCTs reflects its ongoing efforts to adapt to modern warfare lessons and adopt new capabilities. During its year-long training, the brigade mastered systems like Anduril’s Ghost X and AeroVironment’s Switchblade loitering munitions, as well as long-range reconnaissance UAS and EW equipment.

The Army Recognition website notes that the brigade practiced combining reconnaissance, drones, EW, and other capabilities to respond to threats effectively. CENTCOM's area of operations spans over 4 million square miles, encompassing 21 nations, 550 million people, and key strategic chokepoints such as the Strait of Hormuz, Suez Canal, and Bab-el-Mandeb Strait.

Tensions between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, along with ongoing conflicts with Iran, make this region one of the world's most volatile security environments. The US Army believes that this deployment in CENTCOM will offer a vital assessment of the MBCT's integrated approach to enhance surveillance, force protection, and distributed operations in one of the world's most volatile theaters shaped by drone warfare and proxy conflicts.
