A Tehran appeals court in Iran has overturned a four-year prison sentence for singer Hiwa Sefizadeh, who was accused of inciting vice and corruption for performing music directly. The decision came after intense criticism of the punishment, and the appeals court released Sefizadeh from her sentence for incitement and corruption, according to the German news agency dpa on Wednesday.

Instead, the singer was reportedly fined less than $200 and ordered to perform three months of community service for violating public morals. Last month, Sefizadeh revealed her four-year sentence would be served if her concert in February 2025, where she performed Persian classical music with a band, was canceled by security forces.

The singer shared a message from her lawyer on Instagram confirming her sentence reduction. The singer expressed hope that the day would come when voices would no longer be silenced. The prison sentence garnered widespread criticism, with Sefizadeh also receiving support from the cultural sector. Artist House of Music Union president Hamid Reza Noorbakhsh said there was no religious rule or law in Iran that fundamentally and without exception banned women from singing.
