Magena town in Kisii is facing a waste-management crisis as an abandoned cattle dip has been transformed into a massive dumpsite. With no reliable garbage collection system, residents have resorted to using the cattle dip as a dumping ground for their household refuse. The problem extends beyond the cattle dip, with Magena Market also struggling with scattered waste and rotting produce.

Traders in the market, who rely on the business to support their families, are frustrated by the deteriorating conditions. Jane Kwamboka, a trader, expressed her concerns over the smell and the potential health risks for both customers and vendors. Mary Kemuma, another trader, warned that heavy rains could wash the garbage into the market and homes, exacerbating the issue.

The traders appeal to the county government to treat garbage collection as a routine service rather than an occasional event. They fear that without proper waste management, the situation could worsen, leading to disease-carrying pests and even flooding during heavy rains. Josephine Onsombi highlighted the urgency of the situation, questioning how long the residents could continue living in such unhygienic conditions before authorities take action.

The abandoned cattle dip has become a visible symbol of Magena town's larger waste-management problem. As the rains approach, traders and residents are calling for immediate action to remove the garbage and restore proper waste management services.
